We invite talented MDs,
PhDs or MD/PhDs who are committed to careers in investigative dermatology
or cutaneous biology to obtain comprehensive interdisciplinary
training in these fields. Training occurs through intensive participation
in specific laboratory projects in a specialized area of research
tailored to build the academic career of the trainee, participation
in courses, conferences, workshops and seminars. The training is
done within a scholarly milieu in which trainees can develop the
expertise to become independent scientists capable of conducting
the highest quality cutting-edge basic biomedical research in cutaneous
biology. It presents high-level graduate material that moves students
through the steps of the research process and introduces them to
the language and concepts of clinical investigation. It describes
the mechanisms of choosing a clinical or translational research
question, how to design a protocol, implement it, analyze the findings,
draw conclusions, and disseminate the findings.
The program, funded by the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Skin Diseases (NIAMS) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) provides financial support to qualified trainees holding an M.D., Ph.D or M.D./Ph.D for a maximum of two years. Trainees must be U.S. citizens, nationals, or lawfully admitted permanent residents of the United States. Applications for trainee appointments are competitive. The program offers training opportunities to develop areas of interest at the molecular, biochemical, cellular and organ level, both under physiological and pathological conditions.
The TPIMD is founded on the Department of Dermatology's Skin Diseases Research Center's (SDRC) existing research efforts. The SDRC operates four interconnected core facilities (Animal Experimentation, Cell Culture and Molecular Technology, Cellular and Molecular Morphology, and Translational Research). These cores serve the research needs of all SDRC members. Since each member of the training faculty is a member of the SDRC, these facilities are all available to our trainees. These facilities create a dynamic infrastructure and an ideal training environment.
The program is guided by a steering committee comprised of individuals who currently direct major biomedical research programs and are directing training programs. They also are participants in program projects and Training Grants in the campus. The program director is Kevin D. Cooper MD, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Dermatology
The emphasis of the program is on career building of the individuals to a point when they are nationally competitive for extramural NIH funding and for the independent research positions in dermatology and cutaneous biology throughout the United States.

Uniting the resources and expertise of Case Western Reserve University (Case) School of Medicine, its principal affiliated hospital, University Hospitals Case Medical Center (UHCMC), and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VA), the Department of Dermatology provides a dynamic infrastructure and an ideal training environment.
Case School of Medicine is the recipient of the largest volume of NIH grant support of any institution in the state. As a result, the trainee is exposed to exceptional faculty, clinicians, and researchers as well as state-of- the art facilities including the 164,000 square foot Biomedical Research Building.
